Coupland And Thisleton Chase Mexican Title

David Coupland and Mark Thistleton, both members of the England ‘A’ Squad, will represent the EGU in the annual Mexican Amateur Championship and International Pairs Tournament in Mexico City on 27th - 30th March.

Coupland (pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom Ward), from the Boston club in Lincolnshire, who will turn 22 just prior to the championship, will be making his first overseas trip for the EGU. Included in the England ‘A’ Squad for the first time this year, he is a regular county player, who enjoyed some fine performances in 2007. He played in the Open Championship at Carnoustie after winning his Final Qualifying stage at Monifieth while he also finished tied third individual in the Midland Qualifying for the English County Championship. A fourth place was also secured in the Lincolnshire Championship and equal seventh in the North of England Youth Championship.

Thistleton, from Hayling Golf Club, is a former Hampshire Champion and the winner of the Lagonda Trophy in 2006. Like Coupland, he is a newcomer to the England ‘A’ Squad following a successful 2007. He won the Selborne Salver after a playoff, qualified second in the Amateur Championship and made a solid defence of the Lagonda Trophy by finishing tied third. He also represented the EGU in the Finnish Amateur and Hampshire in the County Championship finals.

The Mexican Amateur is played over 72 holes of stroke play with the International Pairs Tournament running alongside, the aggregate scores each day of both players counting.

This will be the sixth occasion that the EGU has sent players to the event but the title has yet to be brought back to England.

Kent’s Lloyd Campbell and David Skinns from Lincolnshire won the pairs event in 2005, while full internationals Matt Cryer from Warwickshire and Cheshire’s Paul Waring finished third in the pairs in 2006.

Hampshire Finish Third at Inter County Finals.  The Finals of the Inter County Competition were played at Cleveland GC in Redcar from 28 - 30 Sep 07, the other 3 qualifying Counties being Wiltshire, Leicestershire & Rutland and Yorkshire.  On the Friday the County were drawn to play Leicestershire & Rutland and got off to a good start winning the morning Foursomes by 2 matches to 1 however the afternoon singles were not what was hoped for and we lost 4.5 to 1.5 to lose the match by 3.5 to 5.5 matches.  With Yorkshire beating Wiltshire 8.5 to 5.5 we had to play Yorkshire on the Saturday.  Once again we acquitted ourselves well in the Foursomes halving the 3 matches in the afternoon singles Yorkshire took the honours by 4.5 matches to 1.5 although the score does not reflect the closeness of the games with 3 of the lost matches going down the 18th.  Sunday saw the County playing Wiltshire for third place and an emphatic win by 8.5 matches  to 0.5.

Thistleton & Burden are Foursomes Champions.   Congratulations to Hayling's Mark Thistleton and Toby Burden on winning the County Foursomes Championships at Basingstoke GC on Sunday 16 September.  On a very windy day they shot the best 18 holes of the day with 66 in the morning and their 72 in the afternoon was enough to see them home by 5 shots from their nearest rivals.  Full details of all scores can be found here.

Brokenhurst Manor Are English Club Champions.   Congratulations to the Brokenhurst Manor team of Jon Young, brother Martin and Rob Gowers on winning the English Champion Club Tournament at Hesketh GC on Friday and Saturday (14/15 September).  They now go on to represent England in the European Club Tournament to be played in Greece in November.
