YOUNG WINS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Martin Young became the first golfer to complete the 'Hampshire Slam' by winning the Sloane Stanley Challenge Trophy and Pechell Salver at the Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands Amateur Championship to add to the Courage Trophy and Mid-Amateur titles he already holds.

The 43-year-old Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club member beat Corhampton rookie Adam Reid 4&3 in the final of the county championship at Hockley, on Sunday, having won the Pechell Salver as the leading qualifier over 36 holes, on Friday.

The number one seed, who 10 years ago was a member of the England A squad, beat in-form Scott Gregory 4&2 in the morning semi-final to prevent an all-Corhampton final after Reid knocked out The Army Golf Club’s Haydn Reay.

Young, who is now off plus four, won the county championship at The Army club, in Aldershot, three years ago having taken 20 years to claim the title but after being selected to play for Great Britain and Ireland against America in the Concession Cup in front of the legendary Jack Nicklaus last month, the 2006 English Mid-Amateur champion’s confidence is sky high.

He will also represent Brokenhurst Manor in the England Champion Club at Trentham Park, in September, after he and clubmates Jordan Ainley and Ryan Harmer won the Hampshire Team Championship based on their qualifying scores on Friday.

Young will also be a cornerstone of Hampshire IoW and CI captain Steve Williams’ six-man team that will try to qualify for the English County Finals for the fifth time in eight years in July."
