Hampshire are comeback kings

The Hampshire Team (left to right): Harry Ellis (Meon Valley), Scott Gregory (Corhampton), Sam Day (Corhampton), Barry Morgan (President, Hampshire Golf), Billy McKenzie (Rowlands Castle), Steve Williams (County Captain), Billy Watson (North Hants), Tom Robson (Rowlands Castle), Mark Thistleton (County Coach) and Martin Young (Brokenhurst Manor).

Hampshire qualified for the English County Finals after winning the SE Group Qualifier at Hendon Golf Club yesterday (11/7).

After a disappointing first round performance the Hampshire team mounted an incredible second round fightback to eventually emerge victorious by eight shots.

The Team were nine shots behind leaders Essex (444) at lunchtime and in ninth position of the eleven competing Counties. Martin Young (73) and Tom Robson (74) had led the way in the opening round but a blustery wind and firm ground made scoring difficult and Hampshire's six man team totalled 453 (thirty-three over par).

Highlights of an astonishing afternoon performance by the Hampshire team were excellent rounds from Scott Gregory (68), Martin Young (69), Billy Watson (70), Harry Ellis (71) and Billy McKenzie (72). Tom Robson (79) had the worst of the afternoon scores but he typified the team's fighting spirit when he holed from 30 feet on his final hole to break 80. The Team's second round score of 429 was twenty-four shots better than their morning round score.

Statos will notice that Hampshire's twelve first and second round scores ranged from 68 to 79, with no score omitted and no score duplicated!

The English County Finals will be played at Wychwood Park GC (Crewe), from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th September. Somerset and Lincolnshire have also qualified.
